Updated Nutrition Labelling
If you have recently purchased GG Bran Crispbread by the package from your local health food store or online through low carb food outlets, you may have been confused to see a slightly different label with updated nutrition facts. We would like to help with the confusion by explaining how the nutrition facts are calculated and how serving size plays into that equation.
On the nutritional label of GG Brand crackers, our customers are used to seeing the serving size listed as one cracker. European products will often state the nutritional information based on 1 cracker if the cracker size is 8 grams or more, and GG has listed 1 cracker as the serving size on their packaging for over 30 years. When Hain Celestial acquired GG, they opted to use the serving size of 2 crackers as recommended by the FDA (the FDA recommends that nutritional information be stated in terms of a serving size of at least 15 grams for crackers). This is why you see a difference in nutritional values listed on the new packaging.
We are also required by the FDA to round up or down when listing the nutritional values on the packaging. One cracker has .4 grams of fat, but two crackers at .8 grams and must be rounded up to 1 whole gram. This mandatory system of “rounding up” the ingredients makes the calorie and fat content appear higher for two crackers. We have not changed the product.
Please refer to the following charts which show the differences between a serving size of 1 cracker and a serving size of 2 crackers.
Breakdown of Calories
1 gram of Carbohydrates = 4 calories
1 gram of Protein = 4 calories
1 gram of Fat = 9 calories
Serving size: 1 Cracker
|1 GG Cracker||Actual||Rounded|
|Protein||1.48 g||1 g|
|Fat||0.4 g||0 g|
|Net Carbs||2.8 g||3 g|
Serving size: 2 Crackers
|2 GG Crackers (1 Serving)||Actual||Rounded|
|Protein||2.9 g||3 g|
|Fat||0.8 g||1 g|
|Net Carbs||5.6 g||6 g|
|Calories||= 45 calories|
You may expect that multiplying the 16 calories for one cracker will result in two crackers having 32 calories, but values for the protein, fat and net carbs were all required to round up on the Nutrition Facts. Each gram of fat is equivalent to 9 calories, so this “rounding up” can make a significant difference.
The most important attribute of the appetite control cracker is its ability to satisfy one’s appetite and eliminate the need for snacks, sandwiches etc. which contain several hundred calories per serving. For example, take two crackers and some low fat cheese which total about 60 calories, drink a glass of water, and you will feel full. You no longer have a need or want for that turkey sandwich which contains 500 calories. You have saved net 440 calories. It’s important to focus on incremental calories saved and not the 12 calories that seem to have suddenly been added to your snack.
